I am a journalist writing a book about grass for Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins. The book is about Western society's fraught relationship to nature, as seen through the lens of grass. The book is set almost entirely in North America and will explore why grasslands are among the most overlooked and undervalued ecosystems on Earth. It will touch on the geologic and cultural history of America's grasslands, their deep connection to Indigenous peoples and transformation by settlers, the changing scientific understanding of grasslands, and ongoing efforts to conserve and restore grassland ecosystems.
