KAREN WASHINGTON
I have been on a journey challenging the food system to be fair, just, and equitable. Knowing that the impact it has had on people and the planet, has adversely affected the most vulnerable. Parts of our food system has contributed to unhealthy food and labor practices. So instead of complaining about it or being complacent, I choose to be outspoken and actively involved in making changes. As a farmer, I consider myself a steward of the land. I take care of the land so I can feed people healthy food. I encourage folks to speak up when they see injustice. I hold elected officials accountable. I mentor the next generation of youth leaders to be fearless and unapologetic. As a result, I consider myself to be just an ordinary person trying to extraordinary things.
