Mario brings two decades of extensive experience in the environmental and climate field. Throughout his distinguished career, he has significantly contributed to advancing climate solutions through policy development, advocacy, and innovative approaches to engaging communities and the private sector.
In his previous role as the Executive Director of Protect Our Winters, Mario led the organization’s theory of change and strategy, increasing its revenue and staff capacity by 600% over six years. He collaborated closely with professional athletes and leading brands such as Burton, Patagonia, and New Belgium to champion climate solutions. Additionally, Mario served as the International Director of former Vice-President Al Gore's Climate Reality Project, where he designed a leadership training program and managed post-Paris international strategy. He was also the Deputy Director at the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), leading strategy and programs.
Mario’s background is as diverse as his experience. Growing up in the highlands of Guatemala, he has worked extensively in Australia, Latin America, South Africa, and the U.S., fostering a deep respect and appreciation for nature’s landscapes and ecosystems. An avid alpinist, snowboarder, mountain biker, hunter, and life adventurer, Mario brings a passionate and personal connection to the environmental causes he champions.
"I am honored to join the Volgenau Climate Initiative and lead its mission to advance innovative nature-based climate solutions," said Molina. "I look forward to collaborating with our talented team and exceptional networks of leaders to drive an impactful set of strategies."
The Volgenau Climate Initiative is a ten-year leadership program dedicated to sparking innovation and breakthrough actions to tackle the worsening climate crisis. VCI is underwritten with generous support from The Volgenau Foundation. When diverse and exceptional leaders are connected and supported in taking a pause from day-to-day pressures while together assessing their field of endeavor, the impossible can become possible. Strategic initiatives can be forged and launched with a focus on real-world impact. Climate and biodiversity scientists agree that we must conserve and restore numerous natural systems this decade as part of a larger effort to rapidly phase out fossil fuels and establish clean, renewable energy. VCI is committed to advancing nature-based climate solutions that advance mitigation, resilience, habitat for biodiversity and equity.
With Mario at the helm, VCI is poised to further our mission of unleashing bold and novel initiatives, ensuring meaningful and measurable outcomes from our programs and retreats. Thank you for your own contributions and leadership as we work together for positive change.
